Brownlee reclaims European title in dramatic style

Britain’s triathletes and paratriathletes are celebrating after a string of medals at the ETU European triathlon in Pontevedra, northern Spain.

Alistair Brownlee completed an incredible victory to reclaim the title, despite getting a flat tyre during the bike section with younger brother Jonathan Brownlee taking silver.

The race had been billed as a showdown between current world number one, Alistair Brownlee and current world champion, Javier Gomez, who was racing in his home town.

Britain’s Todd Leckie finished in 22nd position with David McNamee in 45th. Javier Gomez finished 40th, running in to the finish despite cramp that stopped his progress early in the run.

Alistair Brownlee said: “It was a great team performance today I think. I got the puncture and had to change (wheel) at the top of the hill and there wasn’t a skewer in the wheel so it took me ages. Todd (Leckie) was absolutely fantastic. Harry (Wiltshire) helped me out for the first bit on the bike and then Todd did some fast turns.

Jodie Stimpson was the top Brit in the women’s race with tenth place. Hollie Avil was 12th, Non Stanford 17th and Lois Rosindale 25th.

Britain’s Paratriathletes won four gold medals in the sweltering Northern Spanish heat with British Triathlon’s 2010 Tata Steel Paratriathletes of the year, Jane Egan and Steven Judge amongst the gold medal winners along with Faye McClelland and Charlotte Ellis.

Britain’s junior triathletes ensured a successful end to the 2011 Pontevedra Triathlon European Championships with gold in the team relay event. The team of Maddy Winzer, Cameron Milne, Lucy Hall and Marc Austin struck gold with an exceptional all round team performance.
