Multisport Squad

British Triathlon, as part of its support of non–Olympic disciplines, assists a squad of long distance and duathlon professional athletes and a number of duathlon development athletes. The selection for this squad takes place in the autumn and details of criteria for 2012 will be published here in the summer of 2011.

Racing elite at long distance

British Triathlon does not currently run an elite licence system. Athletes who wish to race elite in Ironman and other long distance events may be asked by the organisers for an elite licence. These athletes should send an email to Mhairibillington@britishtriathlon.org outlining race results over the past 18 months which prove their ability to race at elite level.  To ensure a speedy reply, please include links to the relevant race results.

The first criteria is that athletes must be current members of one of the British home nations associations as professional endorsement cannot be given unless racing under a British race licence . The further criteria under which a professional licence will be granted are outlined below:

1) Be an ex BTF Programme or affiliate athlete moving up into long distance events from the Olympic programme or an athlete who has raced at the same elite level as such athletes OR
2) An existing long distance professional athlete who has a season or pro/elite racing and who has gained at least one top twenty in an international event (such as an Ironman or ITU Long Distance event in the last 18 months OR
3) An athlete on the British Triathlon Multisport Squad OR
4) Be an age group athlete who has obtained a podium place in a recognised domestic middle distance or long distance event or has come in the top ten in the age group category in an Ironman or other international long distance event OR be an age group athlete who has come within 10% of the winner's time in a recognised long distance event. Age group athletes will need to show at least one season of regular long distance racing and consistent results over this season.

Athletes should also include details of which races they wish to enter and any contact details of the organisers if required. BTF will review each application on a case by case basis and will provide proof of elite status to the athlete if approved.

Any elite status conferred only supports an athlete’s application to race in an elite wave and does not guarantee a race entry. The race organisers have final jurisdiction and the proof does not take the place of the Home Nations Race licence provided with membership of Triathlon England, triathlonScotland or Welsh Triathlon.

Athletes wanting to do Ironman branded races should also be aware of the requirements of professional Ironman membership as laid out by the WTC, details of which can be found at http://ironmanpromembership.com.
