Bio...

Alistair is the reigning world champion, having won the title on 10 September 2011 in Beijing. He also won the title in 2009.

He was introduced to triathlon by his uncle, Simon Hearnshaw. As a junior, he was a successful fell and cross country runner, coming second in the English Junior Cross Country Championships and winning the Yorkshire County title on several occasions.

Born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, Alistaire was educated at Bradford Grammar School.  He began a degree in medicine at Girton College, Cambridge, but left in 2006 to move back to Yorkshire, focus on triathlon and study for a degree in Physiology and Sport at the University of Leeds. He is now in the second year of an MsC in finance at Leeds Metropolitan University.

His younger brother, Jonathan Brownlee, is also a triathlon World Champion. He has another yonger brother, Edward, who is not a triathlete.

Brownlee represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the triathlon event, finishing in 12th place and first British competitor. With 3km to go, Alistair led the race, but was over taken by older, stronger athletes. A year later he beat them all to claim the world title.

Brownlee won the 2009 Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship - winning all five of the season's events in which he competed. He was victorious in Madrid, Washington D.C., Kitzbuhel and London before winning the Grand Final on Australia's Gold Coast, on 12 September, and became the first person to win the ITU Triathlon World Championships titles for Junior Men (2006), Under 23 Men (2008) and Senior Men (2009).

In February 2010 Brownlee was diagnosed with a femoral stress fracture of the left leg. He announced his full recovery with a win at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series Madrid on 5 June and then convincingly won the European title in Athlone, Ireland on 3 July.

In November 2010, Alistair Brownlee was awarded the GE British Triathlon Male Elite Athlete of the Year Award in addition to a new award for 2010, the Peter Holmes Award for Inspirational Performance in International Competition. His stunning performance throughout 2011 saw him him once again voted as the GE British Triathlon Male Elite Athlete of the Year in November 2011.

He is a member of UK Sport Lottery funded British Triathlon 2012 Squad training at the satellite centre in Leeds coached by Jack Maitland and Malcolm Brown.
