Helen Jenkins is the current ITU World Champion, having won the title on 11 September 2011 in Beijing. She also won the title in 2008 on a rainy cold day in Vancouver. She won the 2008 title as Helen Tucker before her marriage to fellow British triathlete and coach Marc Jenkins.
Jenkins became the first British woman to win the world title since it changed to a series format (2009 was the first year of the series). She won in London, finished second in Beijing, Kitzbuhel and Madrid, and was 4th in Lausanne.
Her win in 2008 was considered to be a shock by many, as she overcame American Sarah Haskins in a thrilling sprint finish down the final stretch. (Read the article by the International Triathlon Union).
Helen competed in the 2008 Olympic Games, where she finished 21st. She ended 2008 ranked 3rd in the World following the season of ITU World Cup events.
In 2009 the World Championship changed to a Series rather than one off event. Helen had a consistent season and finished third in the Grand Final on the Gold Coast to finish 5th overall in the Series. She also claimed 3rd at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series London.
Helen continued her consistent form through 2010, with 3rd place in Hy-Vee, Madrid and London to move up to 4th in the World Rankings.
Helen is one of the most consistent performers in the World - regularly finishing on the podium at the most high profile events.
Helen was born in Elgin, Scotland, but moved to South Wales as a very young child. She is married to fellow Welsh triathlete, Marc Jenkins, who represented Great Britain on the ITU World Cup circuit - he had top three finishes in Asia during 2010. They were married in October 2008 at Disney World in Orlando, Florida and now live in Bridgend, South Wales with their Labrador, Barney.
Helen was awarded the GE British Triathlon Female Traithlete of the Year Award in November 2011 and also shared the Olympic Athlete Award of the Year Award with Alistair Brownlee, recognising her outstanding performances throughout the season.
She is a member of UK Sport Lottery funded British Triathlon World Class Performance Programme at Podium level and GE British Triathlon Female Elite Athlete of the Year in 2010, 2009 and 2008.
