What is Tata Kids of Steel?

Tata Kids of Steel is British Triathlon's national schools triathlon series aiming to provide at least 50,000 children aged between 8 and 13 with the opportunity to experience triathlon, one of the UK’s fastest growing sports, by 2012.

The events are free, accessible to all and geared simply towards encouraging children to have fun and take part – every child receives a medal for doing their best and having a go.

 Since launching in 2007 Tata Kids of Steel has;

• Held events in over 20 locations
• Worked with over 300 primary schools
• Provided the opportunity for nearly 25,000 children to have a fun experience of triathlon
• Rewarded their efforts with medals, gym sacks, swim caps and t-shirts
• Inspired over 150 Tata Steel employees to volunteer as helpers at the events

With 14,000 children expected to participate in the 18 events across the UK, 2011 is on course to become Tata Kids of Steel’s biggest year yet.

 To date nearly 25,000 children from over 300 schools across the UK have been introduced to the sport of triathlon.

Working closely with British Triathlon to promote the sport at all levels Tata Kids of Steel events have taken place across the UK, encouraging children towards sport and a healthier lifestyle as well as providing a great day out for the local community.  Tata Steel staff have volunteered at the events, enabling up to 1,000 children per event to experience triathlon.

The format follows the form of a short swim of 40-60 metres, followed by a traffic free cycle of 800 – 1200 metres and a run of approximately 300 metres.  The events are fully inclusive ensuring children have a fun and positive experience of sport, regardless of ability.

Bikes and helmets are provided by British Triathlon and every child that participates receives a t-shirt, swim cap, goody bag and medal.
